About Lou
Liefmade is named simply and honestly. Lou’s last name is Lief, and she makes things.
Lou began to sew by hand when she was five years old. By seventh grade, she was sewing her own clothes. Making things with her hands felt natural to her in a way that little else did. As school became more demanding, sewing slowly slipped to the background, but the instinct to create never left. Art in one form or another has always been a guiding force in her life.
After graduating college in 2020, Lou began working an office job. Sewing returned in the evenings and on weekends. Even when she was not at her machine, she was thinking about it. Thinking about shapes, fabrics, structure. Thinking about what she wanted to make next. She began developing her own bag patterns, learning from other talented pattern makers while shaping designs that felt like her own.
In June 2025, she was laid off. What could have been very destabilizing became clarifying. Suddenly, she had time. She set up in her craft room and spent full days there, often losing track of hours. The more time she gave to making, the more certain she became that this was not just something she loved, but something she wanted to build her life around.
Based in Seattle, Lou designs and sews crossbody bags, casual purses, and totes for everyday use. She selects sturdy vintage and reclaimed fabrics for the outside of her bags; materials with texture, character, and history. Each piece is lined with 100 percent cotton and constructed carefully, with attention to durability and comfort. During the long gray winters in the Pacific Northwest, she gravitates toward warmth and color, consciously bringing richness and depth into her work as a counterbalance to the drizzle and overcast skies.
Seattle has also shaped the way Liefmade has grown. Seattlites value originality and care deeply about how and where things are made. Meeting customers and other makers who prioritize ethical production and thoughtful design has made building this business communal. Lief made products are handmade with intention behind every decision, with their own unique and personal story which is a type of magic that can not be manufactured.
For Lou, sewing is part of a larger creative practice. She is also a painter, working primarily in oils and recently exploring oil pastels. She plans to offer prints and original paintings alongside her bags. No matter the medium, her work is guided by the same undercurrent of bringing warmth and beauty into everyday spaces.
All of her favorite possessions are handmade. There is something truly special about knowing that a person’s time, attention, and love went into an object. That care can be felt and this belief shapes everything she makes. What inspires her is seeing her work out in the world. Nothing makes her happier than knowing someone feels joy carrying a bag she made, and that something she created has become part of their daily life.
Liefmade is still growing. Every piece is cut, sewn, and finished by Lou in her Seattle workspace. Every Liefmade product is unique due to her use of reclaimed materials and ever-evolving creative style.
